Sedation Service/ Nervous Patients

Many people feel very apprehensive about dental surgery, often caused by having a bad experience in the past.

We understand these fears and know that the thought of surgery can be daunting if you have not had anything similar done before. However, it is often the case that with careful treatment planning and discussion, implant dentistry can be much less traumatic than root canal treatment or having crowns and bridges made.

The team at The Implant Centre will take the utmost care to ensure that your experience at the centre is as comfortable as possible. Our surgeons and dentists will talk to you throughout your treatment explaining as much or as little as you wish. Many of our patients have commented that they find this to be extremely calming and reassuring.

Many of our patients are comfortable to be treated under local anaesthetic, but for more nervous patients or for larger cases, we are happy to offer sedation which will leave you totally unaware of the treatment being carried out and will therefore make your surgical experience far more relaxed.

Sedation is provided by our in-house sedationist, Dr Andrea Wraith. Andrea is qualified as both a dentist and doctor, and is the Founder of ASA MedCare.

Andrea believes in the holistic approach to pain and anxiety control in dentistry and is happy to discuss cases and advise on the most suitable management strategies in order to provide safe and effective anxiety and pain control.

Andrea began life as a dental anaesthetist and has a Masters degree in dental anaesthesia. She has a long record of involvement with anxiety and pain control in dentistry; she was Editor of the SAAD Digest for over ten years, European representative to the International Federation of Dental Anaesthesiology Societies (IFDAS) for six and a Council member of the European Federation for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry (EFAAD). She has been providing sedation services for dental patients for over seventeen years and has been teaching dental sedation to doctors and dentists for over ten. She has organised international conferences and has designed and set-up many sedation and medical emergency courses, including the Eastman Sedation Course.

She is currently a Council member of the Section of Anaesthesia of the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM).

Andrea has worked for many years in general dental practice and specialist dental clinics as well as in hospital based medicine in Accident and Emergency and as an anaesthetist.

In the past Andrea fenced for the UK at international level and currently enjoys running mountain marathons. She lived with a tribe in the jungle in Indonesia for a month; this was filmed as part of the Tribal Wives series shown on BBC2. She also has an interest in medical care in remote locations and is currently training to provide such care on expeditions to the more inhospitable regions of the world. In addition she has a passion for motorbikes and rescuing animals!
